Maybe it was that California sunshine that got the good things going for the Cubs, but there’s no lie when they say two out of three isn’t bad, particularly when those two were led by birthday boy Ryan Dempster and Carlos Zambrano.
Aside from some questionable base running choices and wondering why they didn’t unpack their offense until game two of the series, the only major complaint was the lateness of the games. Stupid West Coast needs to push its time zone closer because the fourth inning was about all those of us with work/school could manage. So some of the fun that was had, at least for us, was had early in the game (or witnessed on highlights the next day).
-Russell going 1-2-3. Twice. We enjoyed the stunned silence from other Cubs fans.
-Dempster’s new look. We are facial hair lovers and we approve of the new mustache look that Demp is rocking (apparently to change his luck and it looks like it might have worked).
-Pena’s first homer. Finally.
-Byrd’s first homer. Pena’s second homer. Soto’s third homer. All in the same game.
-Russell’s first hit and Bob explaining what would happen to that ball. In case you missed it, someone with nice handwriting would write on the hit ball with all the details of the hit; everyone else would write all kind of questionable stuff on another ball and that would be the one they put in his locker. (Yes, James Russell got two fun things. He’s been dogged so much lately, we feel he deserves a little extra love thrown his way.)
-Big Z dancing in the dugout. He was in a damn good mood that day and he wasn’t afraid to show it.
-The throwback uniforms and the throwback music. We love that kind of stuff. Also, those uniforms were pretty snazzy.
-Despite the lateness of the games which means we missed some of the good stuff, waking up to a win is really nice.
